SUMMARY:Online - Hill Country Alliance Photo Contest - Home in the Hill Country
DESCRIPTION:The Photo Contest is open from March 22 through May 31\, 2023!\nThe Texas Hill Country – famous for its pristine streams\, blooming wildflowers\, star-filled night skies\, and tucked-away small towns – is home to over 3.8 million people and growing fast. Home to three of the fastest growing counties in the country\, the Hill Country’s population is projected to grow to 5.2 million in the next seven years. Native flora and fauna that have called the region home for millennia – from beloved gray foxes and live oaks to delicate monarchs and milkweeds – are finding their habitats reduced as our human homes continually expand into their native ranges. \nAs more and more people call the Hill Country home\, many of the region’s most special qualities – like sweeping open spaces\, clear flowing waters\, and starry night skies – are at risk of being loved to death and lost forever. This spring\, the Hill Country Alliance (HCA) calls on anyone with a camera to share your view of this iconic region and its many inhabitants in the 2023 Hill Country Photo Contest\, “Home in the Hill Country.” \nNow through May 31\, 2023\, entries can be submitted to HCA’s website. Photographers of all ages and skill levels\, from amateurs to professionals\, are invited to participate. Winners will receive cash prizes and their photos will appear in HCA’s 2024 Calendar. HCA’s annual Texas Hill Country Calendar features stunning photography from each year’s photo contest. \nClick here to learn more about the 2023 photo contest.

SUMMARY:San Marcos - Screening of Yana Wana's Legend of the Bluebonnet
DESCRIPTION:Join the Hill Country Alliance and the Indigenous Cultures Institute for a family-friendly play screening and panel discussion at Spring Lake in San Marcos.\nClick to view flyer \nThe play features Indigenous dances\, shares ancient traditions\, and presents an alternative\, Native-origin story about the first bluebonnets and sacred springs in Texas. A panel discussion after the event will allow attendees to learn more about the play\, Coahuiltecan history\, and plans for a new Indigenous Cultures Center. Popcorn\, light snacks\, and drinks will be provided. \nYana Wana’s Legend of the Bluebonnet is a beautiful\, original play that illustrates the power of heritage and the value of your people’s story – especially one as ancient as the flowing springs and petroglyphs of Texas. The story follows 13-year-old María as she learns from her Coahuiltecan grandmother about her cultural history and ancestral connection to both water and the bluebonnet. \nThe event is pay-what-you-can\, and all donations will go towards supporting a new Indigenous Cultures Center at the headwaters of the San Marcos River. \nSeating is limited – register at: bit.ly/SWRSanMarcos \nLearn More: \n\nAbout the Play – Yana Wana’s Legend of the Bluebonnet at www.indigenouscultures.org/youth/\nProposed Indigenous Cultures Center at bit.ly/CulturalCenterNews030723\nHCA’s Spring Water Revival at www.springwaterrevival.org\n\n
