SUMMARY:Canyon Lake - Public Forum on Fair Voting Districts
DESCRIPTION:LWV-CA Invites Public to Redistricting Forum \nWhy fair voting district maps are important and benefit everyone will be the focus of a nonpartisan\, public forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of the Comal Area (LWV-CA) on Monday\, Jan. 20\, at 6 p.m. at the Tye Preston Memorial Library\, 16311 South Access Road\, Canyon Lake\, TX 78133. \nLWV-TX Redistricting Issue Chair Stephanie Swanson and Common Cause Texas Chair JC Dufresne will discuss the current process for determining voting districts and what changes are needed. These improvements include a Citizens Redistricting Commission\, and a state redistricting process and standards that promote fair and effective representation with maximum opportunity for public scrutiny. \nThe League of Women Voters has a long history of promoting transparent\, fair\, and accountable redistricting processes that reflect a fundamental value of representative democracy. In 2016\, eighty-one of the 150 Texas State House seats were completely uncontested and 66% of the State Legislature was determined before a single vote was cast. LWV-CA President Roxanna Deane points out “that this means that citizens cannot hold these legislators accountable through the power of their vote. Voting is our basic and fundamental right. We must ensure that our election maps reflect the will of the people\, uphold the integrity of our vote and the principle of one person\, one vote.” \nThe League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. LWV never supports or opposes candidates for office\, or political parties. For more information\, visit www.lwvcomal.org  \nContact: Gloria Suarez Sasser\, gloriassasser@gmail.com\, 830-556-2887  \nClick here to download the full press release.

SUMMARY:San Antonio - Healing Sore Lands and Sacred Headwaters
DESCRIPTION:FREE ADMISSION – DONATIONS WELCOMED – LIMITED SEATING \n What in the world have we done? \n Only 3 grandmas ago\, tall prairie grasses and four-legged animals thrived here on this same land …beneath where we now park the cars …below the desks and dining tables at our homes\, work and schools. \n What is it about our people’s history that has given us such great dis-connectivity? \n What people would forego their clean waters\, the basis of life? Tossed aside like discarded blown out flat tires and old used carpets. Can we look and see the power\, hope and healing in the palm of our hands? \n Can we connect head\, hands and heart to bring about the simplest paradigm shifts\, begging to be set free? For a great while\, we have ignored prairies and forests\, creeks and springs…thinking we don’t need those things anymore. No wonder they have all nearly disappeared …knowing that we cared so little\, for so long. \n If we were to actually restore our environment…who is behaviorally qualified to receive healed prairie lands? Collectively\, what would we do with ecologically functional forests; or crystalline headwaters gushing up 40 feet into the air? If we build and restore earth back like it was\, will we behave differently than before? \nWill we finally become native to this place? Can we come home\, this time to stay? Are we ready and able to form relationships with nature? Relationships based on reciprocity of giving and taking… stewardship based on saving all the pieces? \n Can we ever learn again\, to conduct honorable harvests? \nPerhaps this is the time\, for there is no time. \nLearn more here. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Blanco - Cold Ones for Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Come join the Hill Country Alliance for a fun day in Blanco!\nDuring the first quarter of 2020\, Real Ale Brewing Company is partnering with the Hill Country Alliance and Blanco County Friends of the Night Sky on a special project: a single batch of their OG Full Moon Pale Rye Ale! \nThis will be on tap only\, and $1 from every pint sold at the Blanco taproom will benefit the Hill Country Alliance. Come out and celebrate with us on Saturday\, February 8th to meet the crew\, and drink a few cold ones for conservation! \nIn 2020\, HCA\, BCFNS\, and Real Ale Brewing Company are also working together to install a permanent sky quality meter at the Real Ale brewery. This device will measure the darkness of the night sky every night; the data collected will help all of us measure the impact of new development on our Hill Country night skies and give us an important teaching tool as we work together to minimize that impact. To celebrate\, we will have a table with educational materials set up from 11 – 4 and HCA staff will give a brief presentation at 2:00 to unveil the new night sky quality meter. \nThe event is meant to be informal and FUN! Hill Country Alliance staff will be around to talk about our mission\, what we do\, and how you can get involved. \nClick here for the Facebook event.  \nNaming Contest!\nThank you to everyone who sent in a name for the Sky Quality Meter.  Join us at Cold Ones for Conservation for the big unveiling of the winning name. \n \n
