SUMMARY:New Braunfels - Texas Drought – The new normal? - CCCA Community Program
DESCRIPTION:Another year\, another drought? Or more candidly\, is drought a normal condition in Texas? As CCCA has focused this entire year’s programs on water\, our final speaker for 2022 is none other than Todd Votteler\, Ph.D. He will discuss the current drought and critical issues regarding the management of water in the future. \n“Water defines Texas. It is our most vital natural resource. Its presence – or absence – has molded our state’s history and people. Often\, it seems that Texas either is coping with too much water or too little. Recently\, it has been too little; rainfall has been scarce for more than a year now in much of the state. Drought has returned to Texas….as it did in the 1950’s. But was it ever very far away?” \nDr. Votteler is President of Collaborative Water Resolution LLC\, Editor-in-Chief of the Texas Water Journal and Texas+Water\, and hosts the Talk+Water podcast.

SUMMARY:Online - Blazing the Trail: Finding Body Diversity and Inclusion in Outdoor Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Feeling connection\, rejuvenation and a sense of purpose draws many to nature. And all of us deserve to experience its beauty! Social movements toward diversity\, equity and inclusion in all spaces are gaining understanding and visibility. As a community\, we’re becoming more aware of words like bias or stigma – we’re learning what they mean\, and how we might see them in ourselves and the world around us. Body shape\, weight and size have become part of these critical diversity conversations. \nHere are some things we are learning: among children\, weight-based bullying is more common than bullying based on race\, sexual orientation or disability status. More than 40% of U.S. adults\, across a range of body sizes\, report experiencing weight stigma at some point in their life. Weight stigma becomes internalized over time and can lead to the development of mental health difficulties as well as medical problems for those who have experienced it. \nHow does weight stigma impact access to outdoor activities and spaces for children and adults? How can we contribute to the building of diverse and engaging spaces for all? Join us as we have a conversation with Kara Richardson Whitely (author\, speaker\, and advocate) and Meredith Nisbet(Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist\, Certified Eating Disorders Specialist Supervisor\, speaker\, and advocate) to learn more about these important thoughts and questions from a lived experience and clinical perspective. Kara will speak about her 3 climbs up Mt. Kilimanjaro and journey as an outdoor inclusion advocate; Meredith\, also an avid mountain view-seeker\, will speak about weight stigma and access to joyful movement from a clinical perspective. This event is in partnership with Eating Recovery Center & Pathlight Mood & Anxiety Center\, and Texas Children in Nature Network. We hope to see you there! \nWorkshop is offered twice on January 4th\, 2:00 and 7:00 Central \nA zoom link for the webinar will be emailed to registrants the day of the event. If you have not seen an email come through please check your spam folder. \nThis webinar will be recorded and a recording will be sent out to registrants several days later and posted onto our YouTube. \nClick here to register for this FREE webinar

SUMMARY:New Braunfels - CCCA Community Program on “The Four Fountain Springs of Texas” with Mr. Gary Perez\, Indigenous Cultures Storyteller
DESCRIPTION:Click to view full-size flyer. \nAs a member of the Coahuiltecan/Pakajua “Painted Peoples” of Coahuila Mexico and Texas\, Gary Perez is well-versed in the culture and traditions of these indigenous peoples whose history pre-dates the Spanish explorers by thousands of years.  These are the original peoples of our area and they\, and their artwork\, have much to teach us. \nThe “White Shaman” mural is one such piece of artwork – a cave-painting above the Pecos River near Del Rio that reaches 26’ wide and 13’ tall. In the mural\, Gary could see depictions of the ceremonies of his people and what seemed to be a map of the area. He knew he had found a message meant to guide the generations that followed. Among the landscape features depicted\, Gary was the first to recognize the four major springs of the Balcones Escarpment\, displayed with amazing geographically accurate spacing. \nJoin us to hear Gary tell the story of the White Shaman and the Four Fountain Springs known to us today as the San Antonio Springs\, Comal Springs\, San Marcos Springs\, and Barton Springs. \nLearn more at https://www.comalconservation.org/

SUMMARY:Online - What Clues for Prevention are in Local Litter?
DESCRIPTION:Study\, Track\, remOve and Prevent (STOP) is a survey method to gather data on types and abundance of litter. STOP consists of measuring a 100 ft (or less) transect\, picking up all trash larger than a cigarette butt in that area\, then cataloging items. Participants enter surveys into the Texas Litter Database (txlitter.org) where it is used by scientists for research. We’ll talk about results from our first two years of surveys and show how data from STOP can provide detailed information on where (and what!) litter is a problem. This program is a nice addition to existing environmental education efforts! \nWorkshop is offered twice on February 1st\, 2:00 and 7:00 Central \nA zoom link for the webinar will be emailed to registrants the day of the event.
