SUMMARY:Kerrville - TexS Talk & Texas Water Symposium: Drought Impacts to the Hill Country

Currently\, there are 14 communities and parks at various stages of this application process\, and another dozen or so are likely to begin the process in three to five years. She brings her extensive knowledge and management of the program to our meeting\, presenting a primer on the application process\, speaking on the program’s intricacies\, and teaching how members of the Hill Country Night Sky Team can participate. SUMMARY:Online - Hill Country Alliance Photo Contest - Home in the Hill Country
DESCRIPTION:The Photo Contest is open from March 22 through May 31\, 2023!\nThe Texas Hill Country – famous for its pristine streams\, blooming wildflowers\, star-filled night skies\, and tucked-away small towns – is home to over 3.8 million people and growing fast. Home to three of the fastest growing counties in the country\, the Hill Country’s population is projected to grow to 5.2 million in the next seven years. Native flora and fauna that have called the region home for millennia – from beloved gray foxes and live oaks to delicate monarchs and milkweeds – are finding their habitats reduced as our human homes continually expand into their native ranges. \nAs more and more people call the Hill Country home\, many of the region’s most special qualities – like sweeping open spaces\, clear flowing waters\, and starry night skies – are at risk of being loved to death and lost forever. This spring\, the Hill Country Alliance (HCA) calls on anyone with a camera to share your view of this iconic region and its many inhabitants in the 2023 Hill Country Photo Contest\, “Home in the Hill Country.” \nNow through May 31\, 2023\, entries can be submitted to HCA’s website. Photographers of all ages and skill levels\, from amateurs to professionals\, are invited to participate. Winners will receive cash prizes and their photos will appear in HCA’s 2024 Calendar. HCA’s annual Texas Hill Country Calendar features stunning photography from each year’s photo contest. \nClick here to learn more about the 2023 photo contest.

SUMMARY:Online - Webinar - Reducing the Impacts of Industry Lighting: How Small Adjustments Make a Big Difference
DESCRIPTION:Click to view full size flyer \nThe Texans for Responsible Aggregate Mining (TRAM) invite you to attend a free webinar about best practices for effective and efficient outdoor lighting in the aggregates and concrete industries. These lighting practices improve quality of life for neighbors\, reduce blinding glare for workers on site and for people driving by\, and diminish environmental impacts of operations\, including to migratory birds in Texas. \nPoorly placed industrial lighting causes light pollution that hinders visibility and poses risks to public health and safety and to wildlife. Though the benefits of smart outdoor lighting are year-round\, this webinar is particularly timely right now\, during spring bird migration season\, when millions of birds fly across Texas using stars to navigate. Unnecessary outdoor lighting is disorienting to birds and increases their rates of fatalities.  \nFortunately\, small adjustments to outdoor lighting equipment and operational practices make a big difference! During the webinar\, attendees will learn about best practices for outdoor lighting at aggregates operations and concrete plants\, with a close-up look at Lauren Concrete’s Dripping Springs facility\, where they have truly stellar outdoor lighting. The webinar will also feature an overview of Audubon Texas’s statewide campaign called\, “Lights Out\, Texas!” to educate the public on the importance of turning off outdoor lighting\, especially during peak migration seasons. \nThis webinar is relevant to anyone interested in best practices for industrial outdoor lighting\, as well as anyone interested in Texas’s bird migrations and how we can all play our part at supporting migrating birds. Presenters include: \n\nChloe Crumley\, Engagement Manager\, Audubon Texas\nCliff Kaplan\, Secretary\, TRAM\nJimmy Grubbs\, General Manager\, Lauren Concrete’s West Region\n\nRegister to attend virtually: bit.ly/OutdoorLightingWebinar. A recording of the event as well as a copy of the presentation will be available on the TRAM website in the days following the event. \nThis free webinar is part of TRAM’s Best Practices Webinar Series\, which seeks to showcase best practices available to the aggregates and concrete industries and the communities they are a part of.

DESCRIPTION:“Favorite Hill Country Native Plants” will be presented by Kathy Saucier & Kathy Lewis\, both of whom are long time NPSOT members. \n“Kathy Saucier and Kathy Lewis are ‘plant whisperers’ and very experienced with growing and propagating native plants in and around Fredericksburg\,” said chapter Vice President and program chair\, Paula Stone.  “Their tips and photos will inspire us all to plant natives this spring. Even if you have just a small area in your yard\, putting in native Texas plants will help our local pollinators and ecosystem thrive.” \nKathy Saucier has been a member of NPSOT since 1992 and is a Fellows Member. She has been with the Trinity Forks chapter since 1992 and now has dual membership with the Fredericksburg & Kerrville chapters.  Her experience includes many years of identifying native plants in the field and she was trained by Texas Parks & Wildlife as a certified Wildscape instructor when the program started in the 1990s.  She is co-chair of the NPSOT Trinity Forks Chapter plant sale and loves to propagate plants.  Her experience is not entirely north Texas though.  She grew up in the Hill Country and now resides on the 1904 Leyendecker family farm in southwest Gillespie County.  Her first experience landscaping with native plants were those growing natively here in Gillespie County. She has lived in Fredericksburg since 2018 and is learning the different climate\, soil and critter issues dealing with growing native plants.  She especially enjoys discovering what grows here native to our area and promoting their attributes. \nKathy Lewis has been a member of the Fredericksburg Chapter of NPSOT since 2008 and has served several terms on the Board of Directors.  She and her husband have lived on their family ranch in western Gillespie County since 1994.  She has been a Hill Country Master Gardener since her retirement in 2008.  Her interests include vegetable and flower gardening\, house and patio plants\, as well as native plants.  She leads the native plant garden volunteers at the Pioneer Museum in Fredericksburg\, and helps out from time to time at the Good Samaritan Center\, the Lipe Garden\, and other local public garden areas.  Through research\, as well as her experiences and observations\, she has gained knowledge about which native plants and trees grow well in our local area. \nFredericksburg Chapter\, Native Plant Society of Texas \nThe chapter holds its monthly meetings on the 4th Tuesday of the month at St. Joseph’s Halle (212 W. San Antonio St.\, Fredericksburg). There is a social time at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend in person and via Zoom. More information can be found online at https://npsot.org/wp/fredericksburg/ and on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/fbgtxnpsot).

SUMMARY:Fredericksburg - Increase Your Gardening Enjoyment by Making it More Successful and Easier
DESCRIPTION:Paula Stone will share her insights on how to increase your gardening enjoyment by making it easier and more successful. Attendees will learn what is needed to make the garden of your dreams and how to enjoy the process.  The program will include a discussion of planning\, tools\, clothing\, weeds\, garden prep\, planting\, plants\, and maintenance.  This overview will help you learn what to do and how to do it\, and that will increase your confidence and enjoyment of your land. \nOver the last 14 years\, Stone has tried various plants and various gardening techniques to deal with the caliche soil\, lack of rainfall\, excessive heat\, and occasional ice storm that are common to Gillespie County.  Her presentation will summarize what she has learned.  Stone hopes that people new to gardening in the hill country will benefit from the many tips she will be sharing.  The goal of her talk is “to help new gardeners make a plan that will increase their confidence and enjoyment of gardening here.” \nStone is a three-term past president of the NPSOT Fredericksburg Chapter\, and has been gardening in Fredericksburg since purchasing her property in 2009.  Stone bought and restored a historic stone home on the edge of Fredericksburg.  She took the property from being so derelict that the realtor wouldn’t go inside to being on the 2012 Historic Home Tour.  The 10 acres surrounding the house were in equally horrific condition\, having been an exotic game farm/puppy mill that had “every conceivable weed that will grow in the hill country” says Stone. \nStone also credits her knowledge and enjoyment of gardening with the many educational opportunities available and friends she has made thru NPSOT.  Her home\, Gilbriar\, has been the site of many chapter plant sales\, meetings\, and several public garden tours. \n“The smartest thing I did for my garden was to join NPSOT and make friends with the people who know things!  I am grateful for their guidance\, encouragement and all the free plant cuttings and seeds that they have given me over the years.” Stone said. \n  \nFredericksburg Chapter\, Native Plant Society of Texas \nThe chapter holds its monthly meetings on the 4th Tuesday of the month at St. Joseph’s Halle (212 W. San Antonio St.\, Fredericksburg). There is a social time at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend in person and via Zoom.
