SUMMARY:New Braunfels - CCCA Community Program - What is Natural Infrastructure\, and Why Do We Care?
DESCRIPTION:Jessica Karlsruher\, CEO of the TREAD Coalition will join CCCA to talk about “What is Natural Infrastructure\, and Why Do We Care?” \nIn this time of rapid growth and development in Comal County\, we are losing many of the benefits that natural areas and open lands provide. When we think about infrastructure\, we think about rooftops\, commercial buildings\, roads and transmission lines. But what about the natural capital – our natural assets – that provide infrastructure to our surroundings and contribute to our daily lives? \nLand and water act as natural infrastructure providing a myriad of benefits to us from clean air to fresh drinking water from our faucets. Maintaining our natural infrastructure is equally important to man-made landscapes. \nCome learn what you should know and why you should care about stewarding your natural capital. \nClick here to learn more from the Comal County Conservation Alliance.

SUMMARY:Online - Hill Country Eclipse Quarterly Round Table Meeting
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to participate in a Hill Country Eclipse Round Table Tuesday\, January 16\, from 12:00 pm-1:30 pm CDT on MS Teams to discuss ongoing preparations for the total solar eclipse\, which may draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to our region in April 2024. \nDuring the last total solar eclipse event in the U.S.\, back in 2017\, many rural communities in its path were overwhelmed by the crowds and the challenges they created for local infrastructure\, emergency services\, lodging\, restaurants\, and supermarkets. However\, the communities that fared the best were those that started preparing years in advance \nIn 2024\, the total solar eclipse will pass through the middle of the Hill Country\, affecting all our communities. This round table is an opportunity for us to share our plans\, learn from one another\, and benefit from lessons learned by others. \nJanuary’s Meeting\nOur guest presenter is meteorologist and eclipse chaser Jay Anderson who will be presenting “Five Days to Go! What’s the Weather?” His talk will focus on the variety of weather patterns that may affect Texas in April and examples of past weather patterns of April 8. Jay will show us where to get more detailed weather forecasts on the days ahead of the eclipse and speculate on what impacts the forecast weather may have. This is a meeting you are not going to want to miss!

SUMMARY:Online - Hill Country Eclipse Lunch & Learn Series - Weather
DESCRIPTION:During the last total solar eclipse event in the U.S.\, back in 2017\, many rural communities in its path were overwhelmed by the crowds and the challenges they created for local infrastructure\, emergency services\, lodging and restaurants\, and supermarkets. However\, the communities that fared the best were those that started preparing years in advance. On October 14 of this year and April 8 of 2024\, the annular and total solar eclipses will pass through the middle of the Hill Country\, affecting all our communities. \nFor the past two and a half years\, the Hill Country Alliance has been convening quarterly round table meetings of the Hill Country Eclipse Team. These meetings are opportunities for residents\, eclipse enthusiasts\, business owners\, and community leaders to share regional planning updates. The meetings have included presentations by subject matter experts on related topics. \nThe Hill Country Eclipse Lunch and Learn sessions are an opportunity to discuss individual niche topics specific to eclipse planning and preparations. Topics will include everything from accessibility and community preparation to public relations and security. \nThe Eclipse Lunch & Learn Sessions take place on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month via Microsoft Teams from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. CST.\nRegister here for the complete series and attend the sessions at your leisure. Each Lunch and Learn will be recorded and posted to the HCA Eclipse Portal. \nPaul Yura\, Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Weather Service\, will be the featured subject matter expert for this Lunch and Learn session on Weather.

SUMMARY:Online - Water Wonks Lecture Series: #2 Use Of Comprehensive Models For Targeting Green Stormwater Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Join this lecture series\, hosted by Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance and learn from Dr. Sheeba M. Thomas Dominguez (San Antonio River Authority Senior Technical Engineer). \nThe San Antonio River Authority (River Authority) has been working on the development of comprehensive water quality models\, tools and analysis since more than a decade for quantitative water quality master planning and Best Management Practice (BMP)/Low Impact Development (LID) prioritization of the San Antonio River Basin. \nThe River Authority recently updated their water quality models for some of our urban watersheds\, based on more current information such as land use\, topography\, stream network\, subbasin delineation\, meteorological data\, stream flows\, ambient and storm water quality sampling data\, wastewater flows\, sanitary sewer overflows (SSO)\, recharge and channel losses\, spring flows\, and diversions. \nAvailable floodplain hydraulic models were reviewed and used to generate rating tables for model reaches.  The revised models were calibrated\, and peer reviewed to observed flow and constituent data following River Authority’s water quality modeling standards. The suite of water quality modeling tools such as the SARA Load Reduction Tool (LRT) which automatically determine load reduction needed for each subbasin and constituent to meet stream standards and the Enhanced BMP Tool to determine the optimal (minimal cost) combinations of BMP/LID were also developed.  The results from the models and tool runs have been further analyzed to determine where water quality improvement measures need to be implemented for improving the surface water quality conditions. \nThe results from these efforts serve as a valuable best science-based resource to the communities in fostering efforts for water quality preservation/mitigation. \nClick here to learn more and register.

SUMMARY:Online - Water Wonks Online Lecture Series: #3 Integrating Stormwater Ecosystem Services Into Local Governance
DESCRIPTION:Join this lecture series\, hosted by Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance and learn from Danielle Craig (Graduate Part-Time Instructor\, Department of Landscape Architecture -Texas Tech University). \nMark your calendars for 3:30-4:30 p.m. on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Water Wonks will feature a host of experts sharing innovative ideas and details about their work in the world of water. \nLecture #3-What you will learn: \nThis research identifies key indicators for stormwater ecosystem services within the comprehensive plans and land development regulations in the Austin-San Antonio Corridor. The rapid urbanization in the Corridor has significant implications for both quality and quantity of stormwater. Identification of key indicators for stormwater ecosystem services within plans and land development regulations can help to restore natural hydrology\, decrease stormwater volumes during precipitation events to help prevent flooding\, and increase stormwater quality.\n \nIntegrating Stormwater Ecosystem Services into Local Governance is an assessment of the various ways that cities can\, and are\, incorporating stormwater ecosystem services into urban planning and development\, including drainage and flood control\, erosion and sediment control\, and stormwater pollution and prevention. The presence of specific planning and design strategies\, such as low impact development\, reduction of impervious surfaces\, land interests and burdens\, and conservation development are also evaluated.\n\nThe results of the evaluation show that recognition of ecosystem services within comprehensive plans and land development regulations is highly variable\, but that there is ample opportunity for integration. The findings can be used to guide advocacy for enhancing ecosystem services in local law and policy and the overall research framework can be adapted to different geographical locations. \nClick here to learn more and register.

SUMMARY:Spicewood - Spicewood Arts Presents Reckless Kelly Concert
DESCRIPTION:Spicewood Art’s\, a nonprofit organization\, mission is to provide the residents of Spicewood\, TX\, and surrounding cities an opportunity to experience\, enjoy and support the visual\, performing\, and literary arts through conducting six performances a season.  Our 5th performance this season is Reckless Kelly\, celebrating the beginning of the eclipse weekend. \nReckless Kelly is an American country rock band. They are excited for one of those to be for us in Spicewood\, TX. \nTo learn more about the infamous Reckless Kelly band\, check out: https://www.recklesskelly.com/
