SUMMARY:Online - What Clues for Prevention are in Local Litter?
DESCRIPTION:Study\, Track\, remOve and Prevent (STOP) is a survey method to gather data on types and abundance of litter. STOP consists of measuring a 100 ft (or less) transect\, picking up all trash larger than a cigarette butt in that area\, then cataloging items. Participants enter surveys into the Texas Litter Database (txlitter.org) where it is used by scientists for research. We’ll talk about results from our first two years of surveys and show how data from STOP can provide detailed information on where (and what!) litter is a problem. This program is a nice addition to existing environmental education efforts! \nWorkshop is offered twice on February 1st\, 2:00 and 7:00 Central \nA zoom link for the webinar will be emailed to registrants the day of the event. DESCRIPTION:Wastewater is one of the biggest challenges facing the Hill Country. New and growing entities producing and treating wastewater– from new housing developments to youth camps– need wastewater disposal permits from TCEQ in order to discharge treated wastewater into rivers\, apply it to land for irrigation\, or reuse it for other purposes. TCEQ has a public participation process for new and amended permit applications\, but that process can be confusing and difficult to navigate. \nOn February 1st at 12PM CST\, attorney Lauren Ice will join us for an interactive conversation on how to navigate the TCEQ wastewater permitting process\, from accessing the permit application materials to requesting a public meeting and contested case hearing. We’ll hear about her experience representing clients who have contested permits\, both successfully and unsuccessfully\, and leave time for Q&A. Currently\, there are 14 communities and parks at various stages of this application process\, and another dozen or so are likely to begin the process in three to five years. The application process is lengthy and extensive\, taking a village (or team) to achieve. Some of you are already actively involved in the process with one or more of these applicants. Some of you would like to help but don’t yet know how. \nOur guest presenter will be Amber Harrison\, Dark Sky Places Program Associate with the International Dark Sky Association. In her previous work as a park ranger and interpreter for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department\, she completed several applications to the IDA Dark Sky Places Program for public lands in West Texas. Amber was also one of the key team members behind the application and designation of the Greater Big Bed International Dark Sky Reserve. She brings her extensive knowledge and management of the program to our meeting\, presenting a primer on the application process\, speaking on the program’s intricacies\, and teaching how members of the Hill Country Night Sky Team can participate. He is a Fellow of the National Speleological Society and a recipient of the National Speleological Society Certificate of Merit. \nMichael has personally explored Honey Creek Cave many times\, a cave described by some as being “dark\, creepy\, and cold!” The mouth of the cave is on the privately-owned Honey Creek Springs Ranch\, which was recently placed in a conservation easement by its owners to ensure its protection in perpetuity. With 20 miles of cave already documented\, it is the longest known cave in Texas. \nClick here to learn more from the Comal County Conservation Alliance.

These lighting practices improve quality of life for neighbors\, reduce blinding glare for workers on site and for people driving by\, and diminish environmental impacts of operations\, including to migratory birds in Texas. \nPoorly placed industrial lighting causes light pollution that hinders visibility and poses risks to public health and safety and to wildlife. Though the benefits of smart outdoor lighting are year-round\, this webinar is particularly timely right now\, during spring bird migration season\, when millions of birds fly across Texas using stars to navigate. Unnecessary outdoor lighting is disorienting to birds and increases their rates of fatalities.  \nFortunately\, small adjustments to outdoor lighting equipment and operational practices make a big difference! DESCRIPTION:“Favorite Hill Country Native Plants” will be presented by Kathy Saucier & Kathy Lewis\, both of whom are long time NPSOT members. \n“Kathy Saucier and Kathy Lewis are ‘plant whisperers’ and very experienced with growing and propagating native plants in and around Fredericksburg\,” said chapter Vice President and program chair\, Paula Stone.  “Their tips and photos will inspire us all to plant natives this spring. Even if you have just a small area in your yard\, putting in native Texas plants will help our local pollinators and ecosystem thrive.” \nKathy Saucier has been a member of NPSOT since 1992 and is a Fellows Member. She has been with the Trinity Forks chapter since 1992 and now has dual membership with the Fredericksburg & Kerrville chapters.  Her experience includes many years of identifying native plants in the field and she was trained by Texas Parks & Wildlife as a certified Wildscape instructor when the program started in the 1990s.  She is co-chair of the NPSOT Trinity Forks Chapter plant sale and loves to propagate plants.  Her experience is not entirely north Texas though.  She grew up in the Hill Country and now resides on the 1904 Leyendecker family farm in southwest Gillespie County.  Her first experience landscaping with native plants were those growing natively here in Gillespie County. She has lived in Fredericksburg since 2018 and is learning the different climate\, soil and critter issues dealing with growing native plants.  She especially enjoys discovering what grows here native to our area and promoting their attributes. \nKathy Lewis has been a member of the Fredericksburg Chapter of NPSOT since 2008 and has served several terms on the Board of Directors.  She and her husband have lived on their family ranch in western Gillespie County since 1994.  She has been a Hill Country Master Gardener since her retirement in 2008.  Her interests include vegetable and flower gardening\, house and patio plants\, as well as native plants.  She leads the native plant garden volunteers at the Pioneer Museum in Fredericksburg\, and helps out from time to time at the Good Samaritan Center\, the Lipe Garden\, and other local public garden areas.  Through research\, as well as her experiences and observations\, she has gained knowledge about which native plants and trees grow well in our local area. \nFredericksburg Chapter\, Native Plant Society of Texas \nThe chapter holds its monthly meetings on the 4th Tuesday of the month at St. Joseph’s Halle (212 W. San Antonio St.\, Fredericksburg). There is a social time at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend in person and via Zoom.
