SUMMARY:Sabinal - Solar Eclipse 2023 RV and Camper Trailer Sites at the Chapman Ranch
DESCRIPTION:It is estimated that between 1.8 and 7.4 million people will travel to the path of totality for the October 14\, 2023 annular solar eclipse\, and South Texas is the only region in the United States that will experience the full annular eclipse. \nChapman Ranch offers unobstructed views of the solar eclipse. Our location will undergo nearly 5 full minutes of darkness\, the longest available in North America! Attendees in our area will also experience the “ring of fire” that is characteristic for this kind of solar eclipse. \nThe camp sites are easily accessible by RVs and camper trailers from HWY 127\, 8 miles southeast of Concan\, TX. \nPlease note that due to local regulations\, admission is limited to self-contained RV/camper trailers. \nTickets are currently available at https://hill-country-solar-eclipse-2023.eventbrite.com

SUMMARY:Online – Hill Country Eclipse Lunch & Learn Series - Education and Outreach
DESCRIPTION:During the last total solar eclipse event in the U.S.\, back in 2017\, many rural communities in its path were overwhelmed by the crowds and the challenges they created for local infrastructure\, emergency services\, lodging and restaurants\, and supermarkets. However\, the communities that fared the best were those that started preparing years in advance. On October 14 of this year and April 8 of 2024\, the annular and total solar eclipses will pass through the middle of the Hill Country\, affecting all our communities. \nFor the past two and a half years\, the Hill Country Alliance has been convening quarterly round table meetings of the Hill Country Eclipse Team. These meetings are opportunities for residents\, eclipse enthusiasts\, business owners\, and community leaders to share regional planning updates. The meetings have included presentations by subject matter experts on related topics. \nThe Hill Country Eclipse Lunch and Learn sessions are an opportunity to discuss individual niche topics specific to eclipse planning and preparations. Topics will include everything from accessibility and community preparation to public relations and security. \nThe Eclipse Lunch & Learn Sessions take place on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month via Zoom from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. CST.\nRegister here for the complete series and attend the sessions at your leisure. Each Lunch and Learn will be recorded and posted to the HCA Eclipse Portal. \nKatie Raney\, Regional Interpretive Specialist for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department\, will be the featured subject matter expert for this Lunch and Learn session on Education and Outreach.

SUMMARY:Junction - Water and Land Stewardship Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, November 11\, at the Coke Stevenson Memorial Center in Junction\, TX to learn more about where your water comes from\, how to manage your land to conserve that water\, and the laws that govern the ground and surface waters of Texas. \nIn recent years the Hill Country’s waters have become threatened by ongoing droughts\, new developments\, and new dams on our rivers and streams. Beyond these threats it’s important for landowners to understand the other factors that determine the availability of water. Three of these factors are the geology of groundwater and surface water\, the management of soil and vegetation on the land\, and the laws that govern groundwater and surface waters in Texas. \nRegister now by going to https://www.llanoriver.org/workshop or https://www.llanoriver.org/ to register online or for a form to register by mail. The registration fee is $10. Don’t miss this timely workshop on the critical water resources in our part of the Hill Country. SUMMARY:New Braunfels - CCCA's Community Program: Protecting Comal's Rural Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Comal County Conservation Alliance (CCCA) Community Program: “Protecting Comal’s Rural Heritage” \nSpeakers: \n\nTiffany Osburn\, Regional Archeologist with the Texas Historical Commission\,  and\nCindy Coers\, Chair of the Comal County Historical Commission\n\nProgram Description: \nComal County is experiencing rapid growth\, development\, and fragmentation of its rural lands.  These lands contain the remaining ranches\, farmsteads\, historic schools\, and special places that have long defined Comal County’s rural heritage; however\, these same lands also play a critical role in supporting our watersheds\, foodways\, wildlife\, and natural infrastructure.  This program will discuss the preservation of our rural heritage along with tools for preservation of historic resources. Our program will also highlight recent successes and ways that historic and archeological site preservation can complement natural resource and land conservation strategies to make significant strides towards protecting the rural heritage of Comal County.

SUMMARY:Online – Hill Country Eclipse Lunch & Learn Series – Safety and Security
\nEric Maloney\, Fire Chief for the City of Kerrville\, will be the featured subject matter expert for this Lunch and Learn session on Safety and Security.

SUMMARY:New Braunfels - CCCA Community Program - What is Natural Infrastructure\, and Why Do We Care?
DESCRIPTION:Jessica Karlsruher\, CEO of the TREAD Coalition will join CCCA to talk about “What is Natural Infrastructure\, and Why Do We Care?” \nIn this time of rapid growth and development in Comal County\, we are losing many of the benefits that natural areas and open lands provide. When we think about infrastructure\, we think about rooftops\, commercial buildings\, roads and transmission lines. But what about the natural capital – our natural assets – that provide infrastructure to our surroundings and contribute to our daily lives? \nLand and water act as natural infrastructure providing a myriad of benefits to us from clean air to fresh drinking water from our faucets. Maintaining our natural infrastructure is equally important to man-made landscapes. \nCome learn what you should know and why you should care about stewarding your natural capital. \nClick here to learn more from the Comal County Conservation Alliance.

SUMMARY:Online - Water Wonks Lecture Series: #2 Use Of Comprehensive Models For Targeting Green Stormwater Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Join this lecture series\, hosted by Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance and learn from Dr. Sheeba M. Thomas Dominguez (San Antonio River Authority Senior Technical Engineer). \nThe San Antonio River Authority (River Authority) has been working on the development of comprehensive water quality models\, tools and analysis since more than a decade for quantitative water quality master planning and Best Management Practice (BMP)/Low Impact Development (LID) prioritization of the San Antonio River Basin. \nThe River Authority recently updated their water quality models for some of our urban watersheds\, based on more current information such as land use\, topography\, stream network\, subbasin delineation\, meteorological data\, stream flows\, ambient and storm water quality sampling data\, wastewater flows\, sanitary sewer overflows (SSO)\, recharge and channel losses\, spring flows\, and diversions. \nAvailable floodplain hydraulic models were reviewed and used to generate rating tables for model reaches.  The revised models were calibrated\, and peer reviewed to observed flow and constituent data following River Authority’s water quality modeling standards. The suite of water quality modeling tools such as the SARA Load Reduction Tool (LRT) which automatically determine load reduction needed for each subbasin and constituent to meet stream standards and the Enhanced BMP Tool to determine the optimal (minimal cost) combinations of BMP/LID were also developed.  The results from the models and tool runs have been further analyzed to determine where water quality improvement measures need to be implemented for improving the surface water quality conditions. \nThe results from these efforts serve as a valuable best science-based resource to the communities in fostering efforts for water quality preservation/mitigation. \nClick here to learn more and register.
