SUMMARY:Wimberley - Healthy Creeks Initiative: Arundo Control Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Since 2016\, the Healthy Creeks Initiative has been working with landowners to control non-native\, invasive Arundo plants (Giant Cane) at no cost to landowners. Over the past three years\, more than 100 landowners have volunteered to participate in the HealthyCreeks Initiative to control Arundo in the Blanco River Basin using targeted\, aquatic-approved herbicide application. This control method has the least impact on the stream ecosystem and is currently being provided at no cost to the landowners. \nOur goal is to restore the diverse\, healthy plant communities along the Blanco\, Pedernales\, Guadalupe\, and Medina rivers and associated upstream creeks to reduce erosion and flooding\, stabilize creek banks\, and provide fish and wildlife habitat. \nIf you live along a creek or river\, we hope you will join us. We’ll be talking about things you can do to keep our creeks healthy\, provide program updates\, celebrate our successes\, and answer questions. \nRSVP by emailing here  or by calling 512-389-8750.

SUMMARY:Fredericksburg - Hummingbird Courtship: Flash! Zoom! Bang! and Done!
DESCRIPTION:Join the Fredericksburg Chapter of the Native Plant Society for a fun class on Hummingbird Courtship. \nBrief: Hummingbirds have returned to the Hill Country! While we are familiar with the tiny birds buzzing around our feeders\, their sex life is more elusive. Learn what to watch for in this class taught by Fredericksburg bird expert\, Bill Lindemann. Male hummingbirds principally use their gorget and aerial displays to earn the right to mate with the female\, but because of their minute size and high speed flying capability\, their courtship is rarely witnessed. If you know what to look for\, the brief razzle and dazzle of the hummingbird mating show can be an unforgettable moment. \nA native Texan from Gonzales County\, Lindemann earned BS and MA degrees from the University of Texas in Austin. After 32 years as an exploration geologist\, he and his wife retired to Fredericksburg in 1994. To fully appreciate the wonderful natural heritage found in the Hill Country\, Lindemann became a self-trained naturalist. He wrote a weekly newspaper column on birding for 19 years\, twice served as President of the Native Plant Society of Texas in Fredericksburg\, founded the Fredericksburg Nature Center\, and was a member of Hill Country Land Trust board for 15 years\, serving as President for four years. He is a frequent speaker on nature subjects. \nCost of the class is $20. It is sponsored by the Fredericksburg chapter of the Native Plant Society in conjunction with the Fredericksburg Independent School District Community Education Program. To Register: Contact Rachel Malinak at (830) 997-7182 or rachelm@fisd.org. \nDate: Wednesday\, May 29\, 2019 \nTime: 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. \nWhere: Fredericksburg High School Library \n1107 Highway 16 South \nFredericksburg\, Texas 78624
