SUMMARY:Water Wonks Hour Lecture Series #7: San Antonio’s Growing Heat Challenge
DESCRIPTION:This presentation explores how extreme heat is impacting San Antonio and Bexar County\, including how to measure human heat stress and respond to it. Globally\, 2023–2025 are the hottest years ever recorded\, and Earth is now warmer than at any time in over 120\,000 years . \nLocally\, San Antonio ranks among the U.S. cities with the biggest rise in days above 95°F\, and days over 100°F are becoming far more common . \nThe official air temperature at the Airport is measured in the shade and does not reflect the true heat people feel across various neighborhoods. Surface temperatures can exceed 140–160°F\, creating real risks of burns and heat illness. \nBetter tools for measuring heat stress\, including Heat Index\, Wet Bulb Globe Temperature\, and HeatRisk are explained. The presentation highlights some practical solutions including: shade\, hydration stations\, misting\, atmospheric water harvesting\, pervious pavement\, geothermal cooling\, passive daytime radiative cooling\, and the planning of cool oases connected by cool corridors.

SUMMARY:GEAA 2026 Water Wonks Hour Lecture Series #9: An overview of the Nature-Based Solutions from The Nature Conservancy (Texas Chapter’s) Flood Resilience Guidance Manual.
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis: \nFlooding remains one of the most costly and persistent hazards facing Texas communities. Homes\, roadways\, utilities\, businesses\, and public infrastructure are repeatedly impacted by flood events across every region of the state. As communities grow and land use patterns change\, runoff increases\, drainage systems are strained\, and the consequences of flooding can become more severe. Traditional flood mitigation tools—detention basins\, levees\, floodwalls\, and storm drain systems—are essential components of community infrastructure; however\, these systems are often single-purpose\, expensive to expand\, and difficult to adapt as conditions change. \n  \nNature-Based Solutions (NBS) use or imitate natural features and/or processes to increase resilience while providing sustainable benefits to people and the environment. When designed to store runoff\, slow flows\, increase infiltration\, reconnect floodplains\, stabilize shorelines\, and reduce erosion\, NBS are an opportunity for communities across Texas to reduce flood risk while also strengthening long-term infrastructure performance and delivering broader community value. \n  \nNBS are not theoretical concepts—they are being successfully implemented across Texas. Examples include floodplain buyouts in North Texas\, stormwater parks in Houston\, regional watershed planning in Bexar County\, and living shoreline projects along the coast. This presentation provides an overview of TWDB’s Nature-Based Solutions for Flood Resilience in Texas guidance manual\, which features many NBS examples across the state and provides the structure to scale them statewide\, showing that NBS can be integrated into day-to-day operations\, project development\, and long-term capital planning.

SUMMARY:Native Plant Giveaway for Landowners Along the Guadalupe River and Tributary Landowners
DESCRIPTION:Are you a landowner or land steward affected by the recent floods in the Upper Guadalupe Basin?\nOn Saturday\, November 14th the Hill Country Alliance and key partners will be hosting a plant distribution event at the Trailhead Beer Garden on Schreiner University campus in Kerrville\, TX. Over the past several months\, a group of nurseries have been custom-growing these plants for landowners impacted by the two recent floods in the Upper Guadalupe River Basin. \nEach landowner will receive containerized native plants and educational resources to help enhance restoration efforts along your water’s edge (riparian zone). Enhancing the riparian zone with a diversity of strong-rooted native plant species helps restore bank stability\, improve water quality and habitat\, and support the long-term health of the Guadalupe River.
