SUMMARY:Canyon Lake - Public Forum on Fair Voting Districts
DESCRIPTION:LWV-CA Invites Public to Redistricting Forum \nWhy fair voting district maps are important and benefit everyone will be the focus of a nonpartisan\, public forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of the Comal Area (LWV-CA) on Monday\, Jan. 20\, at 6 p.m. at the Tye Preston Memorial Library\, 16311 South Access Road\, Canyon Lake\, TX 78133. \nLWV-TX Redistricting Issue Chair Stephanie Swanson and Common Cause Texas Chair JC Dufresne will discuss the current process for determining voting districts and what changes are needed. These improvements include a Citizens Redistricting Commission\, and a state redistricting process and standards that promote fair and effective representation with maximum opportunity for public scrutiny. \nThe League of Women Voters has a long history of promoting transparent\, fair\, and accountable redistricting processes that reflect a fundamental value of representative democracy. In 2016\, eighty-one of the 150 Texas State House seats were completely uncontested and 66% of the State Legislature was determined before a single vote was cast. LWV-CA President Roxanna Deane points out “that this means that citizens cannot hold these legislators accountable through the power of their vote. Voting is our basic and fundamental right. We must ensure that our election maps reflect the will of the people\, uphold the integrity of our vote and the principle of one person\, one vote.” \nThe League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. LWV never supports or opposes candidates for office\, or political parties. For more information\, visit www.lwvcomal.org  \nContact: Gloria Suarez Sasser\, gloriassasser@gmail.com\, 830-556-2887  \nClick here to download the full press release.
