Reclamation soil testing campaign

Press Release: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service – Gillespie County – For Immediate Release: June 29, 2020

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will be hosting a Reclamation Soil Testing Campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to make sure we have the best environment for new seedling grasses to survive and thrive in. This will increase our chances of establishment of desirable plant communities and therefore hopefully reduce erosion and runoff of previously disturbed soil. The testing campaign will be geared for pipeline reclamation work but is open to any landowner. The campaign is open to landowners in Gillespie, Blanco, Kimble, and Hays counties. Soil samples can be submitted to any of the county AgriLife offices listed. The addresses and contact information are as follows:

Agent Brad Roeder, 830-997-3452, 95 Frederick Rd, Fredericksburg TX 78624 – Gillespie

Agent Chris Wiemers, 830-868-7167, 101 E. Cypress, Ste 109, Johnson City TX 78636 – Blanco

Agent Taryn Titsworth, 325-446-2620, 501 Main St, Junction TX 76849 – Kimble

Agent Jason Mangold, 512-393-2120, 200 Stillwater Road, Wimberley TX 78676 – Hays

We need approximately three (3) cups of soil for each sample submitted. Please make sure there are no rocks or large sticks in the soil samples. Take one composite sample for every 10 to 40 acres. A separate sample should be taken for areas with different soil types. Please bring samples in a small zip lock bag. For additional information regarding procedures for taking soil samples, please refer to under the Agriculture page or call 830-997-3452.

Cost will be $10.00 per sample. Results will take about two weeks and will be emailed or mailed to participating landowners. A webinar will be held in August to discuss planting of grasses and forbs, reading the soil analysis, and management practices to help new seedlings survive.

Soil samples can be dropped off from Wednesday, July 1st through Wednesday, July 22nd.

For more information, please call the County AgriLife Extension Service in the county you reside at the numbers listed above.
